Believed to be the early design as opposed to the design of the other SER Truncheon elsewhere in this sale. The decoration is worn but for an item of this age and use, it doesnt detract from the rarity and desirability. This is the very Truncheon illustrated and described in The History Of Truncheons by E.R.H. Dicken F.R.G.S. The South Eastern Railway opened in May 1842 between Croydon & Dover and although worked by the SECR from 1899, as a company, it remained in existence until grouping into the SR. It is likely that this Truncheon was issued before the SECR became involved. Railway Wooden Police Truncheon, South Eastern Railway.
