110 Totem, BR(M) RAINHILL, F/F. Ex LNWR station of absolute fame being the very cradle of Railways. Totem, BR(M) RAINHILL, F/F. Ex LNWR station of absolute fame being the very cradle of Railways. In 1829 Rainhill, a tiny hamlet between Liverpool and Manchester was the scene of trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The steam locomotive was at that time slow and extremely basic, operating at no more than walking pace. The Directors decided to offer a prize for a new locomotive capable of hauling a considerable load at a speed of at least 10 miles per hour over a distance of 70 miles. The trials were held in the October, and Stephensons Rocket amazed the world by reaching speeds in excess of 30 miles per hour and fulfilling all the required conditions. This established the steam locomotive as the prime mover for the railways which rapidly spread all over the world, and the basic features of Rockets design were incorporated into every steam locomotive ever built. This totem is in superb condition with deep colour and shine. £800

151 Smokebox Numberplate 70008. Unlike others purporting to be replacement smokebox numberplates, this is the genuine article, a real replacement fitted to Britannia Class 4-6-2 BLACK PRINCE. Smokebox Numberplate 70008. Unlike others purporting to be replacement smokebox numberplates, this is the genuine article, a real replacement fitted to Britannia Class 4-6-2 BLACK PRINCE. When the loco moved to Carlisle in the latter part of the 60s for use on Carlisle - Glasgow trains, along with other Britannias, the smokebox plates were snapped up by enthusiasts. Replacement numberplates were fitted to some and this is the best example seen. Not a reproduced original, but a flat steel plate, correctly drilled and merely painted in BR style. The accompanying b/w photograph shows the very plate on an open smokebox door on the loco in 1967 at Carlisle Kingmoor after withdrawal. A most interesting item, housed in original hinged box with instructions pasted on the underside lid. The top of the box is clearly inscribed FIRST ENGINEERS OFFICE SS AMSTERDAM PARKESTON QUAY. Although not marked with railway company initials, the SS Amsterdam was indeed the most famous of all LNER ships that plied the English Channel between Harwich and the Hook of Holland. The first ship was built for the GER in 1894 and was scrapped in 1928. The second was built in the late 1930s and quickly requisitioned for war service at the beginning of WWII. She was then converted to a hospital ship, HMHS Amsterdam only to be sunk off Juno Beach after hitting a mine, on 7th August 1944 whilst evacuating wounded troops. In all, 55 wounded, 10 medics and 30 crew were lost. Some German POWs were also lost. The third ship was built for British Railways in 1950 and was scrapped in 1969. £50

472 Carriage Print Entrance To Euston Station, London by Claude Buckle R. Carriage Print Entrance To Euston Station, London by Claude Buckle R.I. from the LMR Railway Architecture series 1952. Here we see the famous triumphal arch, with its four doric columns supporting the portico, which rose to a height of 72 ft. It was designed by Philip Hardwick and built at a cost of GBP35,000. Ten years later, Hardwicks son was commissioned to design the Great Hall of the station, and this was erected in 1849. With its enormous dimensions, it was the largest station waiting room in Britain. During the period 1960-63 the doric arch, the Great Hall and much of the old station infrastructure were savagely levelled for the rebuilding and modernisation of Euston Station, ahead of the electrification of the West Coast Main Line. Mint and in an original style frame and glazed. £90
